Finally. I can’t believe it had taken me so long to watch this Paul McCartney documentary. As with everything, I needed to watch at what I thought was the “right time.” I couldn’t have any interruptions, had to be in the evening and wanted Pete to watch. The last one I don’t know why; maybe hoping he’d show some interest being he went to Paul’s concert with me. Anyway he was on his iPad, not paying attention, which bothered me but as long as he kept quiet it didn’t much matter. We have so little in common, always hoping to share. Anyway…..
This documentary, “Man on the Run,” takes place after The Beatles breakup and how Paul handled it and the formation of Wings. I did know most of the story. How him and Linda lived in an old farmhouse, grew vegetables, rode horses and started to raise their family. It also stated that he was blamed for breaking up The Beatles. This is not how I remembered it. I was in high school and my best friend Helen and I were very into following what was going on with each of The Beatles independently. It was widely thought that Yoko Ono was blamed for breaking them up, (I never believed that). I was aware of the lawsuits they had against each other with Paul using a different lawyer than the other three, he felt their lawyer was crooked. It turned out that he was right.
The documentary showed Paul’s first solo album, “McCartney,” and how it didn’t get good reviews. I do not remember this at all. I do remember when this came out we rushed to the store. The cover picture of Paul, a little scruffy with his baby girl Mary tucked in his jacket was so beautiful. We played that album, like we played every Beatle album, nonstop, pouring over every word.
After that Paul wanted to be in a band, he missed the commaderie and Wings was formed. Their first album was in 1971, “Wild Life.” This was news to me. I had never heard of this album. It was considered very weak and was attributed to there being no known names. Before their next album they recruited lead guitarist Henry McCullough and released their debut single, “Give Ireland Back to the Irish.” (this was banned by the BBC). The followup album, “Red Rose Speedway” was released as Paul McCartney and Wings. This was another one that we bought right away and loved. Its lead single was “My Love.” As a side note this was my wedding song for my first marriage. The documentary again noted that the reviews weren’t good, unbeknownst to us and I’m sure most fans. We bought and loved, “Venus and Mars,” “Band on the Run,” and “Wingspan.” There were four albums in-between that I am not familiar with. I attribute that to running away, getting pregnant and getting married.
I liked Man on the Run. I liked that it was made by him, telling his story.
