Today is the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on New York, the Pentagon and the heroes who crashed their plane in Shanksville, Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001. The promise of “we will never forget,” is especially emphasized today because of this significant anniversary. There is continued respect and admiration of all who gave their lives on that day. It is important that future generations who were not yet born and are now adults to be aware of the events that happened on that day, to continue the legacy of “never forgetting.” This year they are also honoring the survivors and heroes of September 11, 2001, who went on to suffer sickness and death attributed to the aftermath of constant work to try to recover anything from the collapse of the twin towers.

I watched TV this morning, the same as I did on that fateful day, Tuesday September 11, 2001. I remember what a picture perfect day it was. I was 43 years old, living about 40 minutes North of New York City in Buchanan, NY, as I watched the two planes hit The World Trade Center. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I was on the phone with my friend Michele watching together as the events unfolded throughout the day. I remember fighter jets roaring down the Hudson from Stuart Air Force Base. My boyfriend, John at the time, worked in Grand Central Station for the MTA. I had friends and neighbors that worked in the city. I did not know anyone who worked in the downtown area where this tragedy took place.

Pete and I have been watching several specials commemorating the attacks of that day. It’s amazing that in each one we learn a bit more about the events. Different, new interviews, new information that has come out, stories of other heroes who have stepped up and continue to step up so we don’t forget and to honor all. I feel it is important to see these and however painful to watch, to keep learning about September 11, 2001.

It is very important to see how united we were as citizens of the United States of America, with no distinction of being Republican or Democrat.
