Fostering “Violet,” a Dog

A couple of weeks ago I saw a segment on the local news that an area shelter was asking for people to foster dogs or cats over the Thanksgiving holiday. Since we’re not going anywhere or having company, I emailed hoping to try and foster. I miss my Maggie so much and every time I see a dog, I go crazy, I thought this would be good. I would temporarily give love to a dog that needs some and I can fulfill my needs to have a pup.

We looked at some of the dogs on line and of course most of them are Pitties. We’ve had great experiences with them, as my children both have them and they are the sweetest doggies ever. I would have liked a small dog, but not P. I also wanted a female and one preferably house trained. One of the Pits caught my eye, her name was Violet. She came out like a wiggle worm, all love. We took her home last Tuesday afternoon.

This was Richmond Animal Care & Control. While there a volunteer/employee was telling me about a dog that was returned after being adopted. The reason, (unfortunately I don’t remember specifically what reason), I do know that I thought the person who adopted this dog, shouldn’t have been allowed to. I stated as much. This stuck with me. At the time I was surprised they didn’t want more information from me. They did ask if we had other pets. After a couple of days I was also surprised that there wasn’t a follow up call, to see how she was doing.

Anyway, P was off for the week which made it easier for me. Violet is sweet, needy, and gentle. Now I feel bad to have to return her. She made herself right at home. At first I blocked up some rooms because I didn’t know how she was but that same evening the house was opened up to her. She didn’t chew on things, never soiled in the house. She is a really good girl. When you give her a treat, she takes it very gently, she even lady farts, (no odor, thank God) She sleeps on one of Maggie’s beds and has free roam of the house. They sent us home with a crate, (we’ve never crated a dog). When we went out, we made the crate comfortable and she had no problem, again, what a good girl! This little lady would make a great pet for a family and I can’t say how much I want her to get one.

In two more days Violet goes back. I hate to do this to her. We have a large yard that is fenced in and she was doing laps and chasing squirrels. Now she has to go back into a cage. I’m sick about it. The biggest problem for me is I am just not ready to have another dog. She is the best, but like Pits, she is like a bull in a china shop. No bad intentions, just the bulk of her, can easily knock me down. I’m afraid they will just give her to anyone, not looking to make a match. I will voice these concerns when she goes back. I also want to pay the adoption fee for the family that wants to adopt her, hoping this will help. I’ll keep you posted.
