Lists

I tend to accomplish more when I make a list. My list the other day had to do with getting things done in the garden before the cold weather sets in. I wanted to dig up 2 Canna lilies (bulbs), and 1 Dahlia, plant more Daffodil bulbs, plant 2 Shasta daisies I bought for 2 bucks each at Home Depot, and trim the Rosemary in the herb garden. I added arranging rocks around the pond, but that depended on my husband bringing the rocks to the pond for me to arrange.

The Canna lilies were harder than I thought to dig up. I really needed a real shovel not my little gardening one. I didn’t want to ask my husband because then I would have been mad at myself for, “just another thing I can’t do.” So I dug and I struggled. The Dahlia was much easier. I ended up planting the Daffodils in the holes I had dug for the Canna’s. This saved me from digging new holes. As a side note, when you plant Daffodils, put 3 or more into the same hole. This way you will get a big clump of flowers. This doesn’t work for Tulips.

After finishing that I took the bulbs in the back and hosed off all the dirt and laid them out on newspapers to dry, then put them in a bucket of peat moss to keep in the garage until next spring. Some Canna lilies can stay in the ground all year, here in VA, but they have to be planted in continuous full sun and be protected by a wall or barrier. Of course in doing these items on my list, I also had to weed the area. I went in to eat lunch and that was it. I was exhausted. I went to bed early and slept good.

The next morning I felt sore and still tired, but it was supposed to be cloudy and around 60 degrees. Perfect for working outside. I thought I could finish up my list.I took the golf cart out to the herb garden and started trimming the Rosemary. Well guess what, the sun came out and of course the herb garden is in full sun. I continued to work because it was still cool. Not only trimming the Rosemary, I was weeding and gathering up tons of leaves from our neighbors Pin Oak and tons of needles from nearby Loblolly pines. I started inching my way down the herb garden, pulling out Basil that died in the frost the other night and also trimming the Greek Oregano. I started to get hot, I could feel it all over. I planted the Shasta daisies in the herb garden because I needed to get them in the ground.

I literally dragged myself into the house, I think I lasted a little over an hour out there. I was so tired. I ate lunch and took a nap the rest of the day. Yesterday I didn’t go out either, I slept from 3 to 5:30. Today is nice out but I feel too tired to go out and work. I want to stay awake, I would like to read the book I ‘have, but I find my eyes just start closing.

I finished most things on that list and there are always more lists for another day.
