N. Carolina Trip, #2 – New Communities

Our first day there we had an appointment with a realtor from Carolina Plantations. He was taking us to two new communities further north than we had been looking. The weather was horrible, it rained on and off all day, sometimes pouring. It was a challenge for me because at some point I had to go up curbs, walk through mud with my walker and up and down stairs to enter the model homes. It’s a challenge when its raining and you can’t hold an umbrella and you’re very slow, so I’m getting soaked.

Salter’s Haven, this is a new community on the intercoastal. They have their own marina, which was very small with no plans to expand. They had the usual pool, fitness and clubhouse amenities. It was far from the city of Wilmington and about 20 minutes to TopSail beach. We weren’t feeling the community at all. None of the plans appealed to me and I was ready before the tour was over.

Summerhouse, we first heard of this place by my sister-in-law. Their friends had liked it because it was a golf cart community. It was further away and the lots were okay, (you’ve seen one lot, you’ve seen them all). They weren’t selling lots on the water yet and we are not interested in lots that are back to back with other homes. The very peculiar thing abut this was they were selling lots that some of the models couldn’t fit on,, so you would have to buy two lots to fit your home and by buying two lots they wanted you to pay double the HOA fees! Really? That was absurd and besides when we passed people, nobody waved and some were sitting outside their garages. So much for those two communities.

Another day feeling overwhelmed and disappointed. It was unbelievable because we weren’t able to look at any homes that were on the market. As soon as a home came on the market, it sold very quickly, unless it was overpriced and stayed on the market, which it should, people were just being overly greedy.

Tomorrow we are looking at two morwe communities and that’s it, I don’t know what we’ll do if we don’t find anyting we, (meaning me) that I love.
