Spring It’s Almost Here!

I am starting to get excited, Spring is almost here! This week starting tomorrow the temperature is going to be in the 60’s and maybe 70’s by the end of the week. I have been anxiously looking out the window and making lists of what I will tackle and when. Of course this not only depends on the weather but also how I feel. Right now I physically feel good. I’m hoping my knees hold up as it is getting harder to get up and down.

First I will go into the front perennial garden and cut down the Goldenrod, Coneflowers, and Salvia. I leave them up all winter so the birds can feed on the seeds and spread them. I need to clean up the Iris and Lilies and take away the dead, and there is always weeding to be done. The Daffodils are up and getting ready to bloom along with the Grape Hyacinths. This year I am going to leave all the fallen leaves and just mulch over them. Mulching will come much later, after all the pollen and twirly birds come down. I want to move some perennials but it is too soon, we will still get frost for at least the next month.

The pond needs work, which my husband will do, like emptying it from all the leaves from the fall, refilling, setting up the waterfall again, and bringing more of our NY rocks from the woods in the back. We had also bought some copper reeds that need to be put in a drilled rock and place them around the pond. We’ve had them about 6 years and I would like to get the out there this year. My work around the pond is cleaning up the old Siberian Iris, placement of the rocks and weeding.

The foundation plants also need to be weeded and cleaned up and all of the Liriope (6) need to be cut back. My husband will cut down the tall grasses, Miscanthus (3) and Zebra (2), and Butterfly bushes (2). I need to cut back all the Rose bushes, (8) too.

So there is a lot to do and it will feel good to be working outside, something I’ve been looking forward to.
