Sunflowers, “Big Smile”

This morning I couldn’t wait to get out in the garden. The past two days the weather has been perfect, afternoon in the 80’s but mornings in the 60’s and low humidity. Again it was 9:30 when I got out, not as early as I would have liked but earlier than my previous times of 10:30. Anyway, while we were at Kroger’s the other day I took the ride on cart and wanted to check out the flowers in the front of the store and see if there were any bargains. I came upon a sign that said, “Sunflowers 10 for $10.00.” They were in 6″ pots with two in each pot. I couldn’t believe it and I took a picture in case I was questioned at the register, (which I wasn’t). I bought three of them, (6 plants) They were hefty with buds already on them. I wanted to get them in the ground. Over the weekend the temperature and humidity will go back into the 90’s.

I also wanted to put in a solar spotlight that I saw on the Today show from Home Depot, that my husband picked up for me. I wanted to put it under the red maple in the perennial garden. I did get them all in the ground as you can see below. I noticed that the bulbs I had over wintered, Canna and Dahlia, were coming up too! I got very hot and went to sit in the shade. While there I took a picture of one of the Azaleas that had already bloomed, pink and white flowers, and now was in full bloom again with all white flowers, (after we trimmed them). While in the shade garden I took pictures of the Lamb’s Ear that I talked about in my last post and also the one Hydrangea that is in that garden. I had an empty jar of dill pickle juice that I poured around the roots. The flowers on that are mostly blue, where the ones on the side of the garage are mostly pink. I guess I didn’t take a picture of the sunflowers or the light at the bottom of the red maple, oh well, next time.
