Accessibility in NYC

I have to say that New York City is fully accessible when you’re in a wheelchair. I’ve been many times before and have never had a problem. Even if the bathrooms are downstairs and there is no elevator, they do have a bathroom on the main floor. My only complaint has nothing to do with accessibility. When it’s crowded you basically are looking at people’s asses.

At the Marriott Envue we did not get a handicapped room. As long as it has a shower, no tub, I’m fine. The handicapped buttons on both of the entrance doors were not working. Overall wherever we went people were so nice, holding doors, and being helpful. At a very crowded Carnegie Deli, the waiters went out of their way to make room for me.

NY Waterway ferries and buses were handicapped accessible. The ferries were directly across the street from our hotel and ran every 20 minutes. Easy on, easy off. When you got off the ferry on 39th St. the buses were right there to take you where you needed to go. The routes are around the tourist areas and a longer one took you right to the 9/11 Museum. They had the lift for wheelchairs on the side and most of the operators were nice. Returning was another issue. We had the map for the pickups to bring you back to the ferry on 39th Street. They were supposed to run every twenty minutes too. Each late afternoon or evening going back, waiting for an hour at designated spots, there were no buses. One evening we caught one just by chance. No matter where we were, we walked back to 39th Street. I don’t know why Pete wouldn’t get a taxi but he didn’t. It was cold and windy and I was freezing. Our seats at The Marquis Theater were not handicapped and there were steps that I had to maneuver down but I did make it to our seats. The ushers were very helpful and accommodating.

The night we went to the play was our latest night out. The play had stopped twice because of technical problems which set us back about 1/2 hour. We again waited 1/2 hour for the NY Waterway bus to take us back to the ferry. None in sight. Again, Pete wanted to walk. We had just missed the 11:35 ferry by seconds and were the first ones waiting for the 11:50. The ferry came and couldn’t back into the dock. He tried twice, couldn’t dock and we were told that buses would take us back. When we got to the bus, it was over packed and no more room for us and several other people. The driver said there wouldn’t be another bus and that we had to find our way back on our own. The security guard told the driver that some people needed to get off the bus and I needed to get on. Priority was for the handicapped. It says it right on the bus. Big sign, that people would need to be moved or exit bus. The bus driver refused. we ended up getting an Uber, price with toll for the Lincoln Tunnel came to $88.00. I emailed a letter to wecare@nywaterway.com , explained what happened and asked for reimbursement, included copies of the bill. It’s over a week and there’s been no response. So much for “we care.”
