This week in February 1964 The Beatles came to America! I don’t remember their arrival at Kennedy Airport, (only in pictures) but I do remember them on The Ed Sullivan Show. I was 6 years old at the time and even though I can’t remember some things, I do have an exact memory of seeing them. Every Sunday evening my family would watch The Ed Sullivan Show together. I remember sitting indian style on the floor and watching them perform. I was in awe and have stayed in awe all these years later.
The Beatles appearance was probably 6 to 10 years ahead of me becoming a “teeny bopper,” or teenager like most of their fans. My sister was more in their era, she was 15. I don’t remember her in the room watching that evening. I do remember later seeing her 45’s and albums. She had a lot of Chubby Checker, Dion and the Belmonts, Four Seasons music. We were never allowed to hang posters, so there was none of that. She did have individual posters of John, George, Paul and Ringo which ended up being hung in the garage. I explicitly remember those posters and found them in a book about Beatle memorabilia, and she did give them to me. They went in the wayside, (garbage), when my mother threw it all out.
I am very happy to see their arrival and performance on The Ed Sullivan Show still be celebrated and remembered and relavent in the news today with lots of celebrations acknowledging their historic visit to the USA!
