When we checked in to the hotel I noticed a beach wheelchair in the lobby and asked about it. I was informed that several places had them, they were free and given on a first come basis. They gave me literature on where to get one. I have been aware of beach wheelchairs since we went to Hawaii, but never had the opportunity to use one. Carolina Beach Recreation Dept. had them and when I called, was told to come pick it up. You could keep it for 7 days and return it when you were done. I was a little surprised that they asked for no information, like your name or where you were staying or could be reached. It was 3 blocks from the hotel and very convenient. The day we picked it up it was pouring rain, the 1st day, and didn’t even know if we would have the opportunity to use it, (the forecast was not good for the duration of our trip)
Well the weekend came and we were taking a much needed break from looking at real estate. We went shopping on Saturday ducking rain showers intermittently. Sunday came and we decided to go to the beach. It was cloudy but warm enough so off we went. I was so happy to actually be on the beach and put my toes in the sand!!!!! I didn’t go down by the water because there was a very steep shelf to get there.
Look at Me!
I loved being finally on the beach. There was a bunch of dogs running around and little kids to watch. I watched some surfers and the sun ended up coming out!
A big plus was that it was cool out. If it was the middle of the summer I couldn’t do it. The heat strongly affects me, weakens me to total immobility. I’ve read about some people with MS who are not affected by the heat. With this disease, like life, everyone experiences different ,symptoms.
