It is the middle of October, my absolute favorite time of year. I love the cool weather, blue skies, crisp air and the beautiful changing of the leaves. Today the temperature is perfect for me to go out and work in the garden but my knee hurts really bad so I won’t be able to.…

Today I’m going to talk about mushrooms. Throughout the years of gardening, I have encountered many different kinds. In NY I had this white protrusion literally erupting out of the ground. At the time I didn’t even know what it was. I told my grandson that it was an alien egg coming up from underground…

The past 2 days have been a bit cooler, 80’s and cloudy, still some humidity. Late in the afternoon I decided to go do a little work in the garden and see if any peppers had to be picked. I had bought two Parsley plants and wanted to get them in the ground. I had…

Not much going on in these hot days of August in the flower garden. On the other hand, this is the worst year we have had in the vegetable garden. Usually we are overflowing with tomatoes! Last year we gave away to people we didn’t even know, we had so many. So far this year,…

This morning I was looking around out front at all the weeds and work that has to be done out there and foreseeing that it isn’t going to happen anytime soon with temps still in the 90’s. Out of the corner of my eye, I caught site of a yellow finch and saw him perched…

I haven’t seen the hawks in 2 days. They went from hanging out every day for a week to nothing. I really enjoyed watching them so close. Unfortunately I couldn’t get a good picture, I’m too slow. Low and behold, I finally saw a hummingbird at our feeder! I’m so happy. Another one came along…

This weekend I went out to water my deck plants and I notice that some of the blueberries are shriveled up and then I see these beetles. I google and see that they are Japanese beetles. I ask my husband to please bring me my garden gloves, a container of warm soapy water and my…

I did go outside at 6 last night to do a little weeding. I went into the herb garden and cut down parsley, greek oregano, some thyme and cilantro which had gone to seed. Trimmed back rosemary and chives. Then I moved on to trimming dead rose buds and more weeding. I had to do…

A couple of other blooming plants.  I have always wanted a Smoke Bush, the leaf colors are so pretty and the flowers (panicles) so airy and different, resembling smoke, therefore the name.  This variety is “Winecraft Black” and is the first Proven Winners Smokebush. Plant in full sun, at least 6 hours. Height 48 –…
