Suckers Begone!

The past 2 days have been a bit cooler, 80’s and cloudy, still some humidity. Late in the afternoon I decided to go do a little work in the garden and see if any peppers had to be picked. I had bought two Parsley plants and wanted to get them in the ground. I had Parsley overwintered, then it grew leggy and blooming and I had to remove.

There was some weeding, not too bad and the Thyme was out of control. I cut back the Thyme, trimmed the Lavender, the spent blooms, and was having a really hard time. My knees were killing me and although I wanted to stay out longer, I had to go in. This had me hating myself for not being able to get done what I needed to.

This morning was cloudy around 75 and I was debating going outside. I did go out around 10:45 and came in at 12:30. I went out on a mission to erradicate all of the suckers growing around the Crape Myrtles. The problem with that is once I go out there and see all the work that needs to be done, my mission changes. I started on a Crape Myrtle in a shade garden. In that bed besides the Crape Myrtle I have Ladies Mantle, Lenten Rose, Hostas and a compact Holly shrub. What a mess, the shrub was overgrown and besides all the suckers, the bark was peeling and that left a mess. I worked my way in as far as I could go, (which wasn’t as far as I wanted to go) and accomplished what I wanted to.

When I went to get up, my feet couldn’t find a solid place without trampling down a plant, (for the life of me I can’t think of the name, but I know I know what it is.) I couldn’t pull myself up..I started to sweat and thought, “now what do I do?” I felt a few raindrops and thought I really needed to get out of there! I decided to trample the plant I can’t remember the name of. I finally was able to get up and back on the golf cart.

I had noticed that in the adjoining bed, among the Bee Balm, there was small pricker bushes, not really a bush, just some that grow with runners that I have to pull up yearly. I knew I should stop and go in but I couldn’t help myself. Where I put the kneeler was wide open, not a chance at getting stuck. I just hoped my knees would hold up. As I was doing that I also cut down the spent Bee Balm and weeded. I did it! Not as much as I wanted to, I only got 1 tree of 3 but I was content and hot and decided not to push myself any further.

It is now raining and I made it inside.
