Hilton Head – Complications

The week is over. My sister in law Jan and husband Joey own a time share for Hilton and were nice enough to invite us and siblings to spend a week with them. We shared a room with his other sister and husband, which worked out well, (we had our own bedrooms and bathrooms).

The room was not handicapped accessible but had a very big stand alone shower and we brought the shower seat. No rails for the toilet which I’m used to.

The Pool: My main goal was to spend every day in the pool. It was accessible with the seat that puts you in but it also had railings going down 4 steps which I preferred. Pete wheeled me to the edge of the pool and I grabbed the rails and was able to go down the stairs. The deepest part of the pool was 5’. I was very happy and held onto the edges and kicked as best I could.

I tried swimming horizontally across but all I could do was the dog paddle. I’m extremely disappointed that my legs sunk like lead. I then got scared at my immobility and didn’t try again. That night we went to Walmart and bought some noodles and a kick board for me. The following day I tried maneuvering with the kick board and noodles and again scared myself.

Unfortunately I moved the wrong way and felt something in my lower left hip go out of place. That evening while out to dinner I started getting severe jolts of pain down through hip into leg down to my ankle. My whole leg went into a spasm. It only got worse throughout the night. I took Extra Strength Tylenol, Aleve, and Motrin. No relief. Needless to say no pool for the next two days.

I wanted to go to the emergency room but Pete wasn’t feeling it. I decided to use our insurance and use WebMD. I spent an hour trying to get a virtual visit, even calling but I couldn’t schedule. For some reason the site was down. I then called my primary care physician and explained what happened and was told that she wasn’t comfortable prescribing anything without seeing me.

Finally I found a walk in doctor service. I was taken right away and I liked the doctor. I could see that he took the time and went over the medication’s I’m on and took them into consideration. He put me on a regimen of steroids, Prednisone 20 mg. and Vicodin for the pain. Finally some relief. I was only able to go in the pool for one more day and had to just sit there.
