Little Richard

5/10

Yesterday we lost another rock ‘n roll icon, Little Richard. He was 87 and died of bone cancer.

Little Richard was a trailblazer. He had a lifelong career but initially made his mark in the 50’s. I’ve only experienced him on TV but I’ll never forget his energy and talent. There is nothing like an entertainer who puts their whole self into a performance. His songs were pure rock ‘n roll. I’m trying to think of a favorite, I’d have to say “Long Tall Sally.”

He was a major influence on The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.  He took great joy attributing The Beatles success to himself. He was a major idol for them and they couldn’t believe it when they actually got to meet him. He said that if he was white he would have been the king of rock n’ roll, not Elvis.  You know what, I believe he’s right, him or Chuck Berry. Both before my time, but both I’ve listened to and appreciated.

I always feel a sadness when a great talent is taken away but Little Richard led a long life and when your suffering like he was, battling cancer for years, it is a relief to let go and have peace in God’s arms with no more suffering.
