I have been receiving my Long Term Disability since May 14, 1997, I was 38 years old. At the time I was working as an Executive Assistant at The Mearl Corporation, in Peekskill, NY. I was unaware at the time that my benefits included Long Term Disability. Lucky for me that I was covered. Who was to know at the time of my hire that I would need it. Let this be a warning to people to check your benefits and even if you have to pay a little more to have long term disability. do so. Never thinking I would be diagnosed 8 years after my hire with Multiple Sclerosis and have this benefit added to my Social Security Disability. They do give you less if you receive disability payments, which I didn’t think was right and they also deduct taxes, like Social Security Disability. I didn’t agree with that either, but who am I? I was grateful that i was able to collect at all. Every little bit helps.
This is it. I received my last Long Term Disability check. When I turned 65 I thought that this benefit would end. To my surprise I continued to receive it. I had also thought that turning 65 would male Medicare my primary insurance. Upon calling up Social Security, I was told that doesn’t start until I’m 67. According to the letter from Dearborn National, who provides the payments, this benefit stops eight months after turning 66, which would be March 2025. I got one lump sum of all payments I would have received up until that point.
This will effect my contribution to our joint checking account, where this check was deposited monthly. I will have no contributions here on to the joint checking account, I did tell Pete this. It makes me more beholden to stay married. Oh Well
