We are in the middle of January and not much is happening in the garden. I take this time to notice the silhouette of the bare trees and tall grasses with their fronds. I appreciate the bright green and red berries of the holly and nandina, and I like to watch the wildlife coming to the bird baths for a drink and scooting about.
Right now as I look out the window, I’m watching birds at our feeders. I’ve seen the large and small woodpeckers. the yellow finch, (whom I named Atticus, get it?) and wrens feeding on the suet. I did see a new one yesterday, he was small, black with a bright red dot on his head, (Haven’t looked it up yet). The larger bird feeder also has finches, red and yellow, tufted titmouse, cardinals, thrushes and more wrens. My favorite, the bluebirds are very busy in the blue bird feeder.
I get such a kick out of watching the squirrels. Some people HATE them, I don’t. They’re just trying to eat and survive. This year I have noticed two of them hanging around together. I’m assuming they’re young because they are small. Anyway they are chasing each other up and down the trees, along the fence and throughout the yard. Very amusing.
