I’ve started physical therapy for the first time in 8 years. I didn’t want to but Pete thought it would be a good idea because that way I could get a new wheelchair covered by insurance. I agreed, since my last wheelchair prescribed for me is 30 years old, (still in good shape). I am going to the same place, VCU Physical Therapy in Short Pump.
I have a new P/T and at first I didn’t like her, she questioned the numbness I was feeling in my legs. Anyway, that was the first visit. Today was my second and I feel better about her.
She started me on the bicycle where stimulating patches are wired on my calves and thighs. I wasn’t fond of this from previous P/T. Surprisingly I liked it more this time. It felt good and I was energized by the time I finished.
Today we started on the Nustep, (my favorite). I would love to own one of these! Next came the treadmill, this one with side bars and a very heavy duty strap on vest and leg strap ons, (looked like some kind of S&M contraption). As I was saying, this is to hold you upright as you’re walking. I liked this but it proved to be a challenge for me. I was concentrating on standing up straight, taking big steps and trying not to lock my knees, this was very tiring. I came home with exercises to strengthen my core. Next appointment on Thursday the 11th.
