Stenciling

Inspiration painting

I saw this painting in a magazine and liked it a lot. I thought it would look good by the coffee bar in the house in NC. I researched it and found that it costs around $2000. I then decided I would try and paint something like it. This has been an ongoing project for almost four months.

I bought a stencil with coffee cups, and lettering. I had a small canvas, (5×7) and painted it a light gray, (the color of the backsplash). I’ve never stenciled anything before so I tried on scrap paper until I felt comfortable.

I taped the stencil on so it wouldn’t move and proceeded to paint. I removed the stencil and saw that it bled. I tried again on another canvas and it didn’t bleed as much. I repainted over where it bled.

Image I painted

I’m not happy with it. It looks very amateur to me. I also measured to make tiles in the background. Next I used the other stencil, a coffee/ tea cup. I researched to find that there is a spray adhesive specifically for stenciling. I used this and it worked great. I used letter stencils that I already had. I’m not happy with this one either. The letters are too big and not spaced correctly.

I won’t be using them in the new house. I might try copying the original and trying freehand. My ADHD has me impatient and frustrated ready to give up because it takes so much concentration. That is why it took so long. It’s hard for me to focus. I come down very hard on myself and feel like a failure.
