I have a blue Handicapped Parking permit for the state of Virginia and I also have one for the state of New York. This year I had to renew both of them. First I went to renew in Virginia. This was done online. All you had to do was put in the number assigned to your permit, check off renewal, and wahla! your done!!! New one will come in the mail. Very easy peasy. Too easy peasy! I could not believe how easy this was. No new doctor note needed, no proof of residency. If you have an existing permit, no need to prove anything! This really surprised me.
We all know how cynical I am, regardless, when I go to the mall and there are tons of handicapped spaces, my running line is, “I guess everyone’s handicapped today,” Well now it seems if you had a permit for any temporary ailment, just go online and get a new one even if you’re all better. There needs to be new rules when it comes to renewing your permit in the state of Virginia.
Now on to New York. I also had to renew my permit. I keep one for New York because we always take another vehicle when we’re up there, and we’re in New York at least 4 times a year. Well guess what, not that easy. I could not renew the permit online, like Virginia. I had to go in person and I had to show my New York license with proof of residency. I no longer have a New York license so I was unable to renew my permit. Disappointed but I understood and was happy that they weren’t handing them out willy nilly.
I am going to contact my congress person here in Virginia about this. I’ll keep you posted.
